After over 32 International gold and platinum records, Carlos Alomar’s place in music history is secure.  The legendary guitarist burst upon the rock scene with David Bowie in the mid-1970s, when he, Bowie, and John Lennon co-wrote the hit song “Fame.” Over the course of the next 30 years, Alomar would record and tour the world as Bowie’s music director. His ability to play R&B, Philly soul, hard rock, and ambient music meant that he was always in demand – and able to keep up with Bowie’s quicksilver changes of musical personas. He also co-wrote Mick Jagger’s first solo effort, “She’s The Boss,” Iggy Pop’s comeback hit “Sister Midnight,” and played guitar for a Who’s Who of pop/rock royalty –some notables…Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Simple Minds, Yoko Ono, Bruce Springsteen, Alicia Keys, Graham Parker, Mark Ronson “featuring Bruno Mars”, Mystikal, Duran Duran, ….

As a rare Latino musician in the rock scene, Alomar also occupies a singular place in Latin music history.

CARLOS ALOMAR

Over the years, as a producer and founding member of the National Rock Movement of Puerto Rico as well as serving as an advisor to the Latin Grammy Awards organization LARAS (Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences), he continues to champion Latino musicians. As a producer, Alomar established his involvement with the Latin music scene by producing the groundbreaking album Doble Vida for the Argentine band Soda Stereo (in which he plays guitar and raps). And as part of the National Rock Movement of Puerto Rico, he traveled throughout the island, producing and recording local rock bands.

This may seem like a surprising detour from a road that began with David Bowie’s Young Americans album, but the whole of Carlos Alomars’ career has been a surprise.  His is the story of a Puerto Rican-born minister’s son who became the musical director to some of David Bowie’s most lavish and legendary rock tours; it’s the story of a musician who has stubbornly refused to be put in a box.

Alomar grew up mostly in the Bronx and Upper Manhattan, hearing R&B and religious music in his father’s church. He began playing guitar in church at age 10 but was soon sneaking out to play in rock bands with his friends. “My father died when I was 14,” he recalls, “but he told my mom, the boy has a gift, don’t stand in the way of his talent.”  So at 16, he accompanied his best friend Luther Vandross to the Apollo Theater. They both auditioned and were recruited into the repertory workshop “Listen My Brother” where they both honed his skills. Alomar started playing after-hour joints and live gigs with such greats as Chuck Berry, James Brown, Main Ingredient and others. Alomar later became the youngest guitarist to join the Apollo’s house band - The Reuben Phillips Orchestra. By the early 70s he had become a sought after, in-house session musician for RCA Recording Studios in New York City.

It was there that Alomar met Bowie. When recording sessions began in 1975 (for what would later become Young Americans)  Alomar recruited his best friends Luther Vandross and his wife Robin Clark.  “Luther and Robin were my best friend since my teens,” Alomar recalls. Carlos Alomar and Robin Clark  started a long professional relationship and it eventually became a long personal one. They were married in 1970, and became the parents of singer/songwriter Lea Lorien.

Alomar was heavily influenced by the work he did on the Trilogy collaborations of David Bowie and Brian Eno. "Low", "Heroes" and "Lodger". (as is perhaps appropriate to a former sideman of the eclectic David Bowie).  With the introduction of the MacPlus computer, Alomar immediately went to work on a solo album of music for the newly invented guitar synthesizer. Dream Generator - Carlos Alomar's debut album, is brimming with different musical styles, taking its listener from delicate Japanese-sounding music to guitar rock in a stroke, moving from loud, rhythmic sounds to ambient ones. This is one of the first instrumental album ever played on a guitar synthesizer, and was Alomar's bid into the new age of ambient/electronic music.

But Carlos Alomar is not about history; he’s about the future. While remaining active on the music scene Alomar has also become a cutting-edge figure in the worlds of music education and music technology. Carlos Alomar was appointed Distinguished Artist in Residence in the College of Arts and Letters at Stevens Institute of Technology in 2010 and director of the Sound Synthesis Research Center 2011- a first in the 160-year history of the University. In this capacity, Alomar is pioneering the use of digital technology as a means of giving young musicians the tools to change the way music is made….as well as finally realizing his dream of performing “Dream Generator” Live.

HOW WOULD U FEEL?

Lea Lorien has felt just fine since her debut single with Grammy-winning producer/remixer David Morales was featured on his album “2 Worlds Collide”. Within weeks of the debut, it went to #1 on the Billboard Dance Radio chart, speeding past “DESTINY’S CHILD” and bypassing “CIARA”, 2 weeks in a row. It remained on the U.S. top 10 charts for weeks, as well as landed in the “Top 100” album chart for that year. "How Would U Feel" then reached #1 on the UK’s Music Week Club Chart, as well as hit #1 on Billboard’s top radio play in 13 other countries, becoming an overnight anthem in clubs around the world and is now considered a House Music Classic.

Native New Yorker and daughter of legendary rock guitarist Carlos Alomar (David Bowie, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Alicia Keys, Mark Ronson) and singer Robin Clark (Simple Minds, Chic, Luther Vandross, Beyonce.) Lea was always surrounded by exceptional musicians and singers, so it came as no surprise when she started performing and recording with the likes of Mary J. Blige, Carl Thomas, Brandi, Patti Austin, Michael Bolton, Dreams Come True, Shania Twain, Anjelique Kidjo, BLUR, David Bronson and the Grammy-winning group Scissor Sisters.

But she is most proud of her latest endeavors. Her collaboration with David Morales on his album “2 Worlds Collide” has led to some very exciting career developments. Never in her wildest dreams would Lea think that this collaboration would lead her and Morales to a nomination for the Grammy’s newly formed category of “Best Electronic / Dance Album” or that “How Would U Feel” would be featured on “Grand Theft Auto- 5”. In addition to her studio work, Lea toured with Morales to support the album in 5 countries. That year Lorien & Morales went on to win “Best House/Garage Track of the year” at the International “Dance Music Awards”, Winter Music Conference in Miami.

While Lorien and Morales continued to write together, co-producing Suzanne Palmer's “Free My Love” (*69 Records) Lea also collaborated with Lem Springsteen (Mood II swing, Terminal Love) where she was featured on his single “It’s Not Easy” (Independent Soul Divas). Lea went on to pen Louie Vegas’s Beatport “Top Ten” single “One Day”, both songs were soon picked up by H&M clothing stores and Sephora for national in-store play. Keeping her musical taste broad, Lea has also written with Mario Winans, Duo Live, and Alicia Keys. Continuing her writing a collaboration with DJ/producer/remixer Mike Cruz produced a House/Garage track entitled, “I Try” featuring Lea Lorien - the first single off of his Album “Vocal Therapy”. Lea is also an Alumni of the CityKids Repertory Company in New York City, which enabled her to travel the country and perform in front of President’s, celebrities at major charitable functions, schools, senior living facilities, and shelters. While in CityKid’s Lea was given the opportunity to start singing background for actor Malik Yoba as well as  to co-write “Get In The Game” the opening theme song for the Arthur Ash stadium in New York City.

Her most recent works include a co-write with Adam Joseph of "So Incredible" featuring Inaya Day, produced by Pray For More which hit #1 on Beatport, the South African #1 Billboard Chart topping single “Bigger Than Life” produced by Lem Springsteen of Mood II Swing & Louie Vega, featuring DJ/Producer Anane Vega. Written in honor of Eric Garner, Lorien, Lem and Louie teamed up again to write "I Deserve To Breathe" featuring the legendary Adeva, which would later be included on his 2016 Grammy-nominated album “Louie Vega Starring XXVIII”. Lea has also co-written, “Find A Way” for Hungarian DJ and Playboy Centerfold /Playmate Viktoria Metzker which also hit Beatport's House Chart. Always looking to collaborate in different genres Lorien co-wrote “Beautiful Storm” for the famed voice of Bob Sinclar’s “Love Generation”, Gary Pine, featuring Shaggy.  She has also penned “Never Give Up” for American Ideal finalist Mario Vasquez produced by Hype Jones & Alex Sayz for Nero Recordings. Lorien can also be heard on a "Reason" (418 Music), co-written by herself and produced by DJ / Producer Sin Morera and DJ / Producer Mr. Miggs.

Continuously feeding her talents Lea is also the voice of “Sunny Funny”, the girlfriend of PaRappa the Rapper 2 for PlayStation and can also be heard on Snoop Dogg’s 2016 album “Coolaid” singing alongside Swizz Beatz on “Lite It Up”.

Lea is also a published Plus Size Model who has been featured on a Times Square billboard for Dove soap as well as modeled live for The Today Show and Women’s Wear Daily. She is a fitting model for The Gap, Party City  & Urban clothing designer Nakimuli-The Funky Sweetheart as well as a virtual model for Good Housekeeping & Redbook Magazine. She has also had a Beauty Feature in Plus Model Magazine for Editor’s Pick.

Her most recent honored acknowledgment to date was making history with her parents as the first Afro-Caribbean / African American family to be recognized by George Wayne of Vanity Fair Magazine for their  “Downtown 100” list of Most Fabulous, Influential and Relevant of 2016.

Lea has continued to model, write and work in the studio as a singer/songwriter and voice-over actress, forever evolving with the times the possibilities are always endless for this chameleon of talent.
